If you are a professional user then adding 16GB of RAM is a small expense. Apple iMac 27 with Retina 5K Display, 3.8GHz 8-Core Intel i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8GB, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Mid 2020. If you are a demanding user, in a creative or statistics field, then likely you know this and would want 16GB of RAM.

This is partly because it’s becoming the default configuration, and partly because as time goes on, applications require more memory.Īt the end of the day, it comes down to what you can afford, what you will be doing with your Mac, and how long you intend to keep it. I currently have a 2019 13” MBP with 8GB RAM and have been perfectly happy with it’s performance, though I will be getting 16GB when I upgrade next year or the year after. I am specking out a new iMac to buy for home with a Core i7, and was going to consider getting Fusion360 for that computer. I tend to upgrade every 2-3 years so that usually plays a factor in my purchasing decision. Overall performance on iMac 8GB vs 16 GB I use Fusion360 at work on an iMac with 8GB of memory, Core i5 processor.

If you’re planning on keeping the Mac for the long haul, then it would probably be a good idea to get 16GB RAM. There are plenty of people out there that are still humming along with 4GB of RAM in their machines, though I can’t see that being feasible much longer. If you’re someone who is pretty much going to do basic stuff like web browsing, maybe some productivity work in an office suite, and as you said LIGHT photo editing, you will certainly be fine with 8GB RAM and can save the extra 200 to put towards AppleCare (which I highly recommend since everything is soldered onto the logic board and if something goes wrong it will be a pricey fix) or just keep the money. That being said, how use your Mac should factor into that as well. RAM is the single best upgrade you can make. iOS is now reaching that same mark with 7 year old. Macs are used to live long (my MBP Mid 2010 went up to 2017 High Sierra. There’s simply less RAM for apps to play with and, in the future, that might be an issue for you.
The reason is simple: while the 8GB version of the M1 is a stunningly capable machine, it does have less headroom than the 16GB version. If you have any thoughts of a future without a new investment, get a 16GB and be future proof. If you have that £200 and can spend it without breaking the bank, do it. For that kind of use 8GB would now be sufficient. If you can afford it, then by all means go ahead and get 16GB. Neither internal memory nor internal storage can be upgraded after purchase.
